In search of lost time

Time flows. Present becomes past, future becomes present, and the present also becomes past again. In other words, time is always with you as a moving image permanently. The artist¡¯s formal training in photography underlies these questions: ¡°how does time function? What is our relationship to it?¡± The medium of photography inherently displaces time and narrative. The artist is trying to describe this perspective by utilizing computer animations and digital prints. An expanded practice of photography is explored, by simulating light and space within the time-based medium of computer animation.

With the appearance of the digital image in the early 80¡¯s, the photograph has increasingly lost its object-ness. The days of toiling within a darkroom is being replaced by the digital print. Binary code, ones and zeroes, are the materials comprising an image these days. But because of this, the indexical connection between light and the image comes into question. Rather than being a direct trace of light on a chip or on film, we now have software that can generate and simulate these things with accuracy. The next evolution in photographic imagery will be the computer-generated image. The artist here poses the question of art being made with this process. He reinterprets history, time, and space to present a sense of something uncanny within a work of art that is made virtually.
With the theme Temporalities, the artist highlights the aspect of time within his work. The movement of light within the animation creates a gradual movement of shadows indicating the passage of time. The flow of water or the way light behaves is accurately simulated within the computer animation. The space of the virtual creates a framework for the artist to simulate these phenomena using the laws of physics. The artist sees the potential for new forms within the virtual -playing off of the natural laws of nature to create a different sublime experience.

With precise simulations, the movement of light and the passage of time are imaged with layers of literary, historic, and spatial meaning. The endlessness of these animations is a finger, pointing to the permanence of time. There is no beginning nor end and the viewer can view these pieces at any given moment. The artist presents a variety of perspectives based upon his own experiences by utilizing this medium. Each piece represents a moment in the artist¡¯s lifetime. This exhibition has special meaning for the artist as all of the recent animations are within one space. This creates a space for dialogue between each of the works and an interaction between each piece.
